Answers to the questions Miami homeowners ask most about insulation. Don’t see your question? Call us at (305) 404-8114.
What type of insulation is best for a Miami home?
It depends on the part of the house. Spray foam seals gaps and keeps humid air out, blown-in fiberglass is a practical way to add depth to an attic floor, a radiant barrier reflects roof heat, and block foam injection insulates concrete block walls. Many homes benefit from a combination.
How much attic insulation does a home in Miami need?
ENERGY STAR recommends R-30 to R-49 for an uninsulated attic in South Florida’s climate zone. If you already have 3–4 inches of insulation, it recommends adding R-25 to R-30.
How can I tell if my home needs more insulation?
Common signs include rising cooling bills, rooms that stay hot, ceilings that feel warm, an air conditioner that rarely shuts off, and attic insulation that sits below the top of the floor joists or looks flattened, wet or damaged.
Does spray foam work in a humid climate?
Yes. Spray foam creates an airtight seal that keeps warm, humid outdoor air from leaking in, and closed-cell foam also resists moisture. Both help in Miami’s climate.
Do I need to remove old insulation before adding new?
Not always. New insulation can often go over existing insulation that is dry and in good condition. Insulation that is wet, moldy, damaged or contaminated by pests should be removed first.
Can concrete block walls be insulated without tearing them down?
Yes. With block foam injection, foam is injected into the hollow cores of the blocks through small holes, which are then patched.
Does a radiant barrier replace attic insulation?
No. A radiant barrier reflects the sun’s heat away from the attic, while insulation slows heat moving through the attic floor and walls. They work best together.
Can insulation reduce outside noise?
Yes. Dense materials such as rockwool, and spray foam that seals gaps, can noticeably reduce noise from outside and between rooms.
Do you insulate garage doors?
Yes. We insulate garage doors with polyurethane foam to keep the garage cooler and the rooms next to it more comfortable. Learn more about garage door insulation.
